Windows 11 Update Makes Classic Outlook “Completely Unusable” — What Tech Arena Clients Need to Know

Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 Patch Tuesday update has introduced a major issue that is leaving the classic Outlook desktop app unstable, freezing, or entirely unusable for many users. The problem has been widely reported across versions 24H2 and 25H2, following the installation of cumulative update KB5074109.

Multiple users describe Outlook as “completely unusable”, reporting random hangs, lockups, drafts not saving, and the app failing to reopen after being closed. Microsoft has officially acknowledged the issue in its support documentation, confirming that users with POP email profiles are most affected.

What’s Causing the Issue?

After installing update KB5074109, the classic Outlook client may:

  • Freeze or hang during normal use
  • Fail to exit properly, preventing it from restarting
  • Lose unsaved email drafts
  • Require forced process termination or a full system restart to reopen

User reports indicate the issue begins immediately after installing the latest Windows 11 updates, strongly pointing to a compatibility regression introduced by the patch.

Interestingly, this is not the only major issue tied to the January 2026 update cycle. Microsoft has already released emergency out‑of‑band patches for other critical problems — but a fix for the Outlook issue has not yet been published.

Microsoft’s Response

Microsoft has confirmed that Outlook POP accounts are experiencing failures after the update and has listed this as an official known issue. Both Windows and Outlook engineering teams are investigating, but no timeline for a fix has been provided.

The company has stated:

“This is an emerging issue, and we don’t have all the symptoms yet.”

Temporary Workaround

For now, Microsoft and affected users report one reliable solution:

Uninstall the KB5074109 update.

Users who rolled back the update say Outlook immediately returned to normal operation.

However — and this is important — uninstalling the update removes security patches, potentially exposing systems to existing vulnerabilities. Microsoft has cautioned administrators to be aware of the security implications before uninstalling.

Tech Arena’s Recommendation

For our clients running Windows 11 environments:

1. If Outlook is functioning normally

You can continue operating but should delay applying KB5074109 if possible until Microsoft releases a stable fix.

2. If Outlook has become unstable or unusable

We can assist with:

  • Safely uninstalling KB5074109
  • Reviewing POP configurations (or migrating to IMAP/Exchange where appropriate)
  • Applying mitigations that preserve security posture
  • Monitoring Microsoft’s fix releases

3. For business environments using Microsoft 365 / Exchange

These setups are largely unaffected. The issue primarily impacts classic Outlook running POP accounts, which are more common in small businesses and legacy setups.
